Security strategy plays a crucial role in society and in today’s ever-growing world, does not only apply to large companies, but also to Small Medium Enterprises (SME’s).
The client, a software development and telecom company, approached us to assist in developing a security strategy to satisfy demands from both a regulatory and customer needs’ perspective. Cryptv Ltd created a model of the client’s entire network to visualise access paths, prioritise what to fix, and target existing cyber security resources to protect their most valuable assets. This enabled client to have a visual picture of their security status and benchmark progress toward increased cyber resilience. The framework of choice was the ISO 27011 International Standard Information Security for Telecommunications.
Gartner defines Dark Data as “the information assets organisations collect, process and store during regular business activities, but generally fail to use for other purposes.” The term basically refers to what’s left when you have your big data, and then you take all the useful data out.
This can include all data objects and types that have yet to be assessed for their value to any business / competitive intelligence or decision making for one reason or another. This unused or unidentified content sits outside of the retention schedules, classification schemes and retrieval systems that companies rely upon to meet compliance obligations, ease the burden of electronic discovery and ensure decisions are made with accurate and relevant information.
For the clients whose volume of enterprise information continued to rise at unprecedented rates, we worked with and facilitated collaborative engagements between information professionals, risk managers, IT teams and business peers enabling appropriate action to be taken on dark data. This came via a dark data action plan that served as a roadmap for dealing with the unmanaged content sitting at the edges of the enterprise. With a blend of technology, industry best practices and emerging state-of-the-art platforms, we have helped large enterprises gain insight into which dark data can be highlighted and leveraged to provide business value, and which should be justifiably deleted in line with corporate policies.
